Visit Portland Saturday Market at Portland's Waterfront this Weekend

On Earth Day a couple of years ago, Portland Saturday Market  gave out  Redwood starts to customers.  This one ended up with us.  It didn't do too well the first year.  However,  it has made a great comeback!  It must have said "The planet's heating up, I'd better help!"

Wherever you live, if you can, plant trees, trees, trees!

And this weekend come to Portland Saturday Market to see our Oregon landscapes printed on canvas as either gallery wraps or on panels.  We are Mesman Images, row 200, near the food court. portlandoregonphotos.com

Jaliscos' Mexican Food and Halloween Art at Waterfront Park

This past weekend, Portland Saturday Market had a Jack-o-Lantern carving and painting contest.
Here are the winning Jack-o-Lanterns made by Sara from Jaliscos at the Portland Saturday Market food court, where Sara and her husband sell all natural Mexican food..  One would never expect that a food vendor would have such artistic talent as well.

Well, this weekend, after you have had a taste of Jaliscos' food, step across the aisle to Mesman Images . . . we don't have Sara's talent but we have a different one.

Dean Caldwell, who climbed El Capitan in 1970, is at Portland Saturday Market every weekend

If you didn't attend the showing of the documentary Valley Uprising last night, you missed the story of our very own Dean Caldwell climbing Yosemite's El Capitan in 1970.  We don't know if one has to be crazy or immensely courageous to climb these very beautiful, vertical, and impressive granite walls.
Read Life Magaziene's article of Dean's drama.

Valley Uprising was an extremely interesting documentary, showing the battle between those intense climbers, striving to be the first, best, or quickest to the top, and the park rangers, who were determined to enforce rules that restricted the freedoms of the adventurers who saw Yosemite National Park as their climbers' paradise.

Today, Dean has traded his climbing shoes for woodworking tools, as he creates inventive and practicle jewelry displays under the name Ear Nest.  His product's design is so original, it earned him a patent.

Every weekend, you can find him in the 200 row at Portland Saturday Market in Waterfront Park.

After buying one of Dean's jewelry displays, head north in the 200 row and check out Mesman Images' (space 216) Photography and Digital paintings.

People of all ages can have an interest and fun at Portland Saturday Market

For any age, there's something interesting and fun to see, to do, to eat, to drink, or to buy at Portland Saturday Market (Open on Sundays Too!).

Just like these two cute girls, playing with their ballons while Dad waits for the food that he ordered and Mom looks in a booth nearby for some new original wall decor.

Come and see our new Japanese Garden canvas panels.  We are Mesman Images Row 200 Space 216 near the Food Court on the Waterfront.

A great weekend in Portland, Oregon

A great thing to do this weekend is to check out Portland's Waterfront, the old town, and of course the popular Portland Saturday Market that's also open on Sundays.  Walk through the Esplanade, relax on the lawn, checking out the massive steel of the double-deck, vertical-lift bridge . . . the Steel Bridge as the name indicates . . . have a bite at Portland SaturdayMarket's food court, then find some original, handmade souvenirs at Portland Saturday Market, or find a new creative piece to decorate your home . . . and since we are in Oregon, there is zero sales tax.

Small Business Saturday

Who decided that Small Business Saturday would be best placed between Black Friday and Cyber Monday?!  That person didn't have much concern for small businesses, who get crushed by Black Friday sales where everyone buys big screen TVs, cell phones, computers and so on, while on Monday the plan is to spend the day sitting in front of a computer screen, spending . . .  spending . . .  spending.

We have a great idea . . . come down to Portlands's Waterfront Park and spend some of your Cyber money on gifts that are handmade here in the US; here at Portland Saturday Market, originality and creativity is hard at work, all year 'round.  Visit ourbooth #208 under the Burnside Bridge -Mesman Images- & check out our digital paintings & fine art photography.  Mention this post & get 10% off.

Shop for Mom at Portland Saturday Market

Portland Saturday Market is the perfect place to buy a special gift for Mothers' Day.  Buying high-quality hand-made products directly from the artisans who made them is not only much more original and thoughtful than buying mass-produced products at the mall, it also keeps a maximum of your dollars here in the local economy.  The Market is open on Saturday from 10-5 and on Sunday from 11-4:30.  Spend $25 and get a free Tri-Met ticket or two free hours of parking at any Smart Park garage.  Mention this post and receive 10% off any purchase at our Mesman Images booth #208, beneath the Burnside Bridge at Waterfront Park.

The Flat Garden at Portland Japanese Garden

We love the Flat Garden at Portland Japanese Garden. However, due to the narrow space between the railing and the benches on the porch of the Pavilion, it's impossible to capture the entire Flat Garden in one shot. So, Yvonne decided to get creative and produce a panoramic image that includes everything!

All of the plants and trees appear just as they do to the naked eye. However, Yvonne had to adapt the wooden rail and the overhang of the roof of the Pavilion in order to show, all at once, the view to the right, to the left, and center. We hope that you like it!

Spring is Here!

Spring has arrived 4 weeks early in Portland! The crocuses and some of the daffodils in our front yard are already blooming. . .

**********
The other day, we were contacted by a photographer that we've never heard of. The gist of his message was that he apparently sells similar images and products to ours and he offered to "sit down and show (us) a few tips and shortcuts". Hmm. . . We thought we were doing pretty well, on our own. Bizarre. . .

**********

Our ETSY ARTIST OF THE DAY is the multi-talented D. Antonia Truesdale, whose Etsy shop is called The Midnight Orange.

An artist since a very early age, D. Antonia says that her work evolved "from jewelry onto mixed media" and that she "loves making altered books and assemblages". We're particularly fond of her magnificant clay pieces, like those shown above.

You'll find more of D. Antonia's work in her Etsy shop.
You can also follow her on:

As always, thanks for supporting independent artists and buying hand-made!

Michelle Obama's Campaign for Healthier Food

When I first came to America I had no idea that salted butter even existed! I was first introduced to it during a meal at a chain restaurant in Los Angeles.

I had just tasted my green beans when I called the waitress over to tell her that they weren’t salted. She gave me a puzzled look and gestured to a small dish on the table, containing pads of butter.

Unsure of why she'd want me to add butter to my veggies, I tried a little of the spread on a piece of bread and . . . there it was -- salty butter.

I was reminded of this last night, when I saw Michelle Obama on Larry King Live, talking about the unhealthy food in school cafeterias. I couldn’t agree more with the Obamas regarding the need for healthier food for kids. Let’s hope that this current push towards better food in cafeterias also spreads to our restaurants! (Restaurants that everyone can afford, that is!)

Etsy Artist of the Day:

We LOVE the work of Melbourne-based artist Ember Fairbairn-Ramsay! Nothing we could say about her art could be as effective as you viewing it for yourself! You can see her work in her Etsy Shop , become a fan on her Facebook Fan Page , and watch her YouTube Video.

Thanks for supporting independent artists and buying hand-made!

We're Still Here!

Najac, Aveyron, France © Mesman Images Portland

Wow! We've really been AWOL in the blogosphere! Like everyone else, we've really been scrambling to make ends meet in this horrific economy. As full time artists, that's a challenging enough task, even when times are good!

We've also been making a conscious effort to print a number of images that, for whatever reason, we've never taken the time show publically. One such print is the one shown above, which is the village of Najac, in southern France. We just adore quaint, rustic villages. . . something there is no shortage of in France!

Our Journals at Portland Japanese Garden

The gift shop at the Portland Japanese Garden is now carrying our journals and sketch books! The garden is on its Winter time schedule now, so its hours are

  • 10am-4pm Tuesday–Sunday
  • Noon-4pm Monday
The garden just announced that its next FREE admission day will be Tuesday, November 11th.
On this free admission day, the garden hopes that you'll bring some non-perishable food items to donate to the Oregon Food Bank.

If you're in the Portland area, the Japanese Garden is not to be missed. And, while you're there, please drop by the quaint little gift shop and have a look at our latest work!

Etsy Artist of the Day:

Today we'd like to draw your attention to Treasurefield, an Etsy artist who practices her craft from an undisclosed location between the mountains and the coast in the Carolinas. We love her heart pendants and, well, everything else in her shop, too! Admire her creations in her Etsy shop Treasurefield or her sister shop Yesterdazey.

Our website is back online with a new and improved shopping cart. We'll be adding new images and products each day. Check it out here: Mesman Images
